義大利比薩斜塔修建於1173年，由著名建築師博納諾·皮薩諾主持修建。它位於羅馬式大教堂後面右側，是比薩城的標誌。開始時，塔高設計為100米左右，但動工五六年後，塔身從三層開始傾斜，直到完工還在持續傾斜，在其關閉之前，塔頂已南傾(即塔頂偏離垂直線)3.5米。1990年，義大利政府將其關閉，開始進行整修。

為何傾斜？鐘樓始建於1173年，設計為垂直建造，但是在工程開始後不久（1178年）便由於地基不均勻和土層鬆軟而傾斜，1372年完工，塔身傾斜向東南。

The tower began leaning shortly after the construction began in 1173 due to inadequate foundation on unstable subsoil. As a result, the structure listed slightly to the southeast upon its completion in 1372.

The design of Tower of Pisa was attributed to a renowned architect Bonanno Pisano.The tower is situated behind the Cathedral as a symbol of the city of Pisa. Initially, it was designed to be perfectly vertical. The tower began to tilt about five years after the construction has progressed to the third floor. The Italian government decided to close the tower to the public for reconstruction in 1990 as it has tilted 3.5 m to the south from the centerline.
